Choose a shortlist for a specific accounting job
The best AI accounting agents for your team depend on the task, destination system and review process. A product that helps classify documents is not automatically the right choice for recurring close work or purchase-invoice preparation. This comparison uses those differences to create a shortlist, rather than assigning an unsupported overall score.
The public evidence supports examining Basis for broader accounting workflows and Dext AI Assist for guidance-driven document work. Microsoft Payables Agent provides a further, narrower comparison for purchase invoice drafts in Business Central. These are different scopes, so the table identifies the relevant output before comparing the controls. [1] [2] [6]
Our fictional buyer is a three-person accounting team at Alder Supply. It needs help with recurring entries, invoice classification and a controlled AP workflow. The team should divide those needs into separate tests. It may select one product, several products or no product for a particular task after checking the actual integration.
This is a desk-research comparison checked on October 8, 2026. We have not run a hands-on benchmark of the products. The synthetic worksheet below defines a reproducible pilot the reader can use; it does not contain measured vendor results.
Compare the output and its documented boundary
Scroll the table to compare all columns.
| Product | Relevant workflow | Output to inspect | Boundary or open question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basis | Recurring accounting and close work | Source-linked proposed entries and workpapers | Confirm exact integration, permissions and review configuration |
| Dext AI Assist | Guidance in Costs and Sales | Suggested fields and configured document actions | Bank workspace not supported by AI Assist documentation |
| Microsoft Payables Agent | Purchase-invoice preparation in Business Central | Draft finalized as an unposted purchase invoice | No invoice posting or bank-payment authority inferred |
Compare the financial output before the feature count
Basis's small-firm page describes preparing journal-entry proposals with source links and review before posting. Its corporate-accounting page describes recurring close work and approved entries. Those descriptions make it relevant when the required output is an accounting work product and the team wants to inspect the supporting evidence. [3] [4]
Dext documents suggestions and guidance within Costs and Sales. Its scope is relevant when the team needs help with document fields and configured actions in those workspaces. The product's help page says AI Assist does not support the Bank workspace, so it should not be shortlisted for bank-workspace matching on that evidence. [2]
Microsoft documents Payables Agent finalizing drafts into unposted purchase invoices. That makes it relevant to an AP team using Business Central and evaluating invoice preparation. The same documentation explicitly separates draft confirmation, approval workflow and posting. Do not record its draft output as autonomous payment execution. [6]
For Alder, these distinctions change the demonstration request. A recurring journal task needs an entry with sources and review. A document-guidance task needs the suggested field values and their application mode. An AP task needs the draft, the relevant exception and the resulting ERP record. A generic conversation does not demonstrate all three.
Check the integration at the operation level
Ask how the product reads the source data and writes the destination record. A connector name is a starting point, not a complete description of the integration. Identify whether the connection is read-only, creates drafts, writes entries or requires a separate manual step. Record the exact workflow the vendor confirms.
Do not assume every edition, entity or account is supported because a product mentions an accounting platform. Confirm the intended organization, environment and required permissions. If the public evidence does not answer the question, mark it for provider confirmation rather than adding an integration from memory.
Also ask how the product handles a changed source. If an invoice is replaced or a ledger value updates after the proposal is prepared, the review record should make the difference visible. The application should not present the earlier source as though it still supports an unchanged decision.
For Alder's pilot, require a destination-system reference for each produced record. The reviewer should be able to find the actual draft or proposed entry. An agent's statement that it completed the task is insufficient when the accounting team cannot locate the output.
Compare the review modes with the same questions
Ask each vendor who can configure the workflow, who can review the result and which action follows confirmation. Use the same questions even when the interfaces differ. A polished approval button may approve a suggestion, a document or a financial instruction; the distinction needs to be explicit.
Dext's account-guidance documentation describes Manual review and Auto-apply modes, with administrators managing guidance. It also explains that an applicable approval workflow takes priority over guidance-driven publishing. These details help evaluate document handling, without implying that publishing a document releases a bank payment. [5]
For Basis, ask the provider to show the review boundary for the exact recurring accounting task you need. Its public material describes reviewed work, but the team should inspect how approvals, permissions and resulting ledger records work in the intended setup. Do not infer the entire configuration from a broad product promise.
For Microsoft Payables Agent, ask to see a draft exception and the unposted invoice that follows confirmation. Then identify the separate approval and posting steps in your Business Central process. A successful draft demonstration answers only part of the AP acceptance question.
Evaluate evidence and correction quality
A useful output connects a financial value to its source. For an invoice amount, the reviewer needs the document reference. For a proposed category, the reviewer needs the applicable policy or supporting context. For a reconciliation decision, the reviewer needs the receipt and invoice evidence. These are different evidence relationships.
Ask to correct a proposal during the demonstration. Inspect whether the original value, revised value and reviewer decision remain understandable. The team should be able to explain the change later without relying on the operator who happened to be present.
Include a missing source and a contradictory source. A product that performs well on clean documents may still conceal uncertainty when information is incomplete. The correct response can be an exception with a named next step. Penalizing all exceptions as failures encourages unsupported completion.
Review the records the product treats as ordinary as well as those it flags. A false approval may never reach the exception queue. For a small pilot, inspect every output against the expected result so that confidence labels do not determine what receives scrutiny.
Confirm availability, costs and data handling directly
This comparison does not invent a universal monthly price or country list. Confirm the relevant subscription, account eligibility, required add-ons and onboarding conditions with the provider. A publicly visible product page is not evidence that every feature is included for every buyer.
For Dext, the help material notes that some guidance actions depend on subscription or region. Keep those conditions in the evaluation worksheet. A task demonstrated in one account may not be available under the configuration Alder intends to buy. [5]
Ask for the total cost of the intended workflow: product access, necessary extraction or processing allowances, integration work and ongoing administration. Use an actual quote or documented plan when comparing money. Avoid converting an advertised time-saving percentage into a financial return without observed baseline data.
Data-handling review needs the applicable product terms, security documentation and contractual commitments. Do not treat a logo or general statement as proof that a particular customer requirement is satisfied. The responsible owner should identify the evidence needed for the intended documents and systems.
Keep unconfirmed requirements visible. “Not confirmed” does not mean a product lacks the feature; it means this comparison does not have sufficient evidence to recommend it on that basis. Resolve material unknowns before the purchasing decision.
Use the same synthetic cases for each relevant product
The worksheet contains six cases for Alder. Each case names the financial output and expected review behavior. Use only the cases relevant to the product's documented scope. A document-guidance tool should not receive a poor score for failing to perform an unrelated bank transfer, but it should not receive credit for that transfer either.
The ordinary invoice case checks source values and a traceable proposal. The ambiguous category case checks whether the product preserves the need for judgment. The duplicate checks identity handling. The receipt mismatch checks exception evidence. The changed source checks renewed review. The interrupted write checks whether the system preserves an unresolved result.
Provide the same source set and agreed accounting policy to the products being evaluated for the same task. Write expected outcomes before the run and record configuration differences. Otherwise a comparison may measure different instructions or permissions rather than meaningful product behavior.
Keep the pilot small enough for complete review but representative enough to include the important failures. If the first set reveals a new issue, add a labeled case and repeat the relevant check. Do not publish a market-wide accuracy ranking from a handful of selected examples.
A repeatable pilot worksheet
Scroll the table to compare all columns.
| Case | Input | Expected output | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary invoice | 600 USD source invoice with defined category policy | Traceable proposal with correct source values | Source reference and destination record |
| Ambiguous category | Equipment description requiring judgment | Review request with specific uncertainty | Proposed treatment and accountant decision |
| Duplicate document | Second scan of the same supplier invoice | Connected duplicate investigation | Source identities and retained original |
| Receipt mismatch | Invoice 24 units; receipt 18 units | Visible six-unit exception | Order, receipt and owner response |
| Changed source | Amount revised after proposal review | New version and required renewed review | Before, after and approval references |
| Interrupted write | Tool response unavailable after attempted creation | Unresolved state investigated before replacement | Operation reference and recovery decision |
Choose from evidence rather than a synthetic score
After the pilot, compare which required tasks each product performs, which outputs are correct and which controls remain unresolved. Separate must-have integration gaps from preferences about interface or workflow. A product can be attractive while failing a necessary permission or evidence requirement.
For Alder, a reasonable shortlist could retain Basis for a recurring-entry demonstration, Dext for Costs and Sales guidance, and Microsoft for Business Central purchase-invoice preparation. That is a direction for evaluation based on documented scope, not a purchase recommendation or a claim that all three are needed.
Record the remaining human work. If reviewers must rebuild every source relationship, the tool may not improve the intended process even when the final category is correct. Conversely, a well-evidenced exception can save investigation without completing the financial decision automatically. Describe those outcomes precisely.
The final decision should name the chosen task, configuration, evidence and accountable reviewer. Grant only the permissions evaluated for that workflow. Use the individual Basis and Dext pages for provider-specific questions, the accounting category guide for process design and the financial-controls checklist for unresolved actions.
